Hyundai, Michelin renew R&D partnership to advance tyre technologies

R&D to focus on extremely-low rolling resistance and improving performance, safety, and driving range.

Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) announced it has signed a new partnership agreement with French tyre manufacturer Michelin to accelerate the introduction of next-generation technologies for the future mobility sector.  The new agreement ensures the collaboration agreed under two previous partnership agreements, signed in 2017 and 2022, continues into the future.

Under the new three-year agreement, the two companies will continue joint R&D into extremely-low rolling-resistance tyres to further improve fuel efficiency; improve handling and safety of high-performance tyres; and upgrade the performance for premium electric vehicle (EV) tyres to improve performance, safety, and driving range.

The two companies have also agreed to establish a virtual tyre development system for off-road applications, and advance Michelin’s SmartGrip technology to enhance braking performance and efficiency.

Hyundai said the renewed collaboration aims to address the evolving demands of electric and autonomous vehicles, including high load capacity, driving performance, and environmental sustainability.

Shin Yong-suk, vice president and head of the Genesis Engineering Design Center at Hyundai Motor Group, said in a statement: "Through the third phase of technological collaboration with Michelin, we expect to achieve tyre technology innovations that will lead the future mobility market."
