Hyundai-LGES, Huayou in battery recycling partnership in Indonesia

The agreement covers production waste from battery plant and used EV batteries.

Hyundai Motor Group’s (HMG) Indonesian battery manufacturing joint venture with LG Energy Solution, PT Hyundai LG Indonesia Green Power (HLI Green Power), has agreed to collaborate with Zhejiang Huayou Recycling Technology, a subsidiary of China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, to recycle electric vehicle (EV) battery materials.

HLI Green Power began operations at a US $1.1 billion plant in Karawang, in Indonesia’s West Java province, in 2024, supplying battery cells to HMG EV operations in the region, including in India and across Southeast Asia.

Under the agreement, HLI Green Power will send production waste from its plant to Zhejiang Huayou Recycling Technology’s local recycling operations, where it will be processed into black mass, which will then be refined to extract core battery materials including lithium, cobalt, and nickel, for reuse in battery cell manufacturing.

The companies have also agreed to collaborate in recycling materials from used EV batteries, which are expected to play an increasingly important role in the global EV battery supply chain.

A spokesperson for HMG said in a statement: "The agreement marks an initial step toward establishing a circular battery economy that spans the entire battery life cycle. We will continue efforts to build a sustainable battery supply chain.”
