Honda Motor Company has previewed two next-generation hybrid-electric prototypes during its 'Global Business Briefing' in Japan. Honda confirmed the two models are part of a broader programme to launch fifteen new hybrid models globally by 2030, aimed primarily at the US market. The models will feature a newly-developed hybrid system and will be based on a new platform.

The prototypes included a Honda-branded hybrid-electric sedan, and a new Acura SUV, both of which are scheduled to be launched in the US in 2027. A “large size” (D-segment) hybrid model is scheduled to be launched in 2029.

The unveiling of the company’s beefed-up hybrid programme comes shortly after the automaker cut back its battery electric vehicle (BEV) programme in the US, in response to weakening demand following policy changes by the Trump administration.

Honda Motor’s CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, said in a statement: “Honda will reallocate more development and production resources into hybrid models to accelerate the market launch ahead of the original schedule and increase the number of compelling products. We have made steady progress in the development of hybrid vehicle technologies, where Honda has strengths, based on our belief that hybrid models will continue to be the key to addressing environmental challenges.”

Honda said that it has made significant improvements to its next generation, two-motor hybrid system, including “expanding the range where the engine operates most efficiently and increasing the driving efficiency of the hybrid unit,” cutting overall fuel consumption by 10% compared with the current system, while also reducing system costs by 30%. The automaker said it has also developed a new electric AWD system with highly precise and responsive motor control.

Honda also provided an update on its next-generation advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which it plans to introduce in 2028, saying that the new system can assist drivers with vehicle operations such as acceleration and steering throughout the entire route, seamlessly on both expressways and normal roads, based on driver inputs to the navigation system.

Honda also revealed that it plans to increase hybrid vehicle production at its Marysville and East Liberty vehicle assembly plants in the US, so that all of the company’s North American plants are capable of producing hybrid models.
