Honda recalls 440,000 Odyssey vehicles over airbag software issue

The recall is intended to correct the airbag deployment calibration and reduce the likelihood of unintended activation.

American Honda is voluntarily recalling about 440,000 Honda Odyssey vehicles from model years 2018 to 2022 in the US to update software linked to side curtain and side airbags.

The action relates to the calibration of the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit, or SRS ECU.

According to the company, the deployment threshold margin has been determined to be too sensitive to impact affecting the underside of the vehicle.

As a result, side curtain airbags or side airbags could deploy unintentionally when the vehicle passes over potholes, speed bumps or road debris, raising the risk of a crash or injury.

The recall is intended to correct the airbag deployment calibration and reduce the likelihood of unintended activation.

As of 2 April 2026, the company has logged 25 injury reports associated with the issue, with no fatalities recorded between 24 January 2017 and 2 April 2026.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification by mail and be asked to take their vehicles to authorised Honda dealers.

Dealers will update the SRS ECU software or replace the unit if required, using revised airbag deployment settings.

American Honda said the recall is being carried out to encourage owners to complete repairs promptly after receiving notice.

The move follows several recent vehicle safety actions across the automotive industry.

Earlier this month, Ford Motor Company recalled more than 422,613 vehicles in the US over a possible windshield wiper malfunction.

In the previous month, Ford also recalled more than 1.7 million vehicles because of rear-view camera problems, after a February recall involving 4.38 million vehicles tied to a software issue affecting trailer lighting and braking.

Elsewhere, Nissan recalled about 643,000 Rogue SUVs in the US in February over powertrain-related concerns, while BYD announced a recall of 88,981 Qin PLUS DM-i plug-in hybrid vehicles in China in December due to a battery-related safety issue.
