Honda is recalling 325,588 Odyssey vehicles in the US because of a rearview camera problem that can stop the image from appearing when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.
The recall covers 2018 to 2020 Honda Odyssey vehicles built between 24 January 2017 and 22 July 2020, according to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Honda estimated that 0.8% of the recalled population has the defect.
Honda said the issue arises when water enters the rearview camera assembly, leading to corrosion on the printed circuit board.
If that happens, the rearview camera image may not display while the vehicle is in reverse.
The company said this reduces rearward visibility and raises the risk of a crash or injury.
According to the filing, the problem stemmed from two factors in the camera assembly.
Honda said the specification for the rearview camera housing boss hole was not adequate for the mounting screw, while variation in the housing position on the assembly jig could allow the screw to become misaligned during assembly.
That could create enough stress during fastening to crack the boss material. Over time, exposure to environmental conditions, including thermal expansion and freezing of trapped water, could widen those cracks and let water into the unit.
The recall population was identified through manufacturing records.
It includes vehicles previously covered by NHTSA Campaign No. 20V-438, as well as 2018 model year vehicles fitted with Magna rearview cameras that had earlier been addressed through a Product Update campaign for the same issue.
Honda said both the earlier recall remedy and the product update used redesigned Magna rearview cameras. Under the latest recall, those parts will be replaced with rearview cameras supplied by Sony.
The affected vehicles are no longer in production.
Registered owners will be asked to bring their vehicles to an authorised Honda dealer, where the rearview camera will be replaced with an improved part.
Last month, Honda recalled over 880,000 vehicles in the US due to problems with rear suspension system.
That recall affected Honda Pilot models sold between 2016 and 2022; Honda Passport models sold between 2019 and 2023; Honda Ridgeline models sold between 2017 and 2023; and Acura MDX models sold between 2014 and 2020.
In April, about 440,000 Honda Odyssey vehicles from model years 2018 to 2022 were recalled in the US to update software linked to side curtain and side airbags.
