Hon Hai to use new Nvidia chips

Foxconn plans to become a contract manufacturer of automated and autonomous AI equipped EVs

Graeme Roberts October 18 2023

Nvidia and Hon Hai (Foxconn) announced today, at the fourth annual tech day in Taiwan, a deal to supply a range of Nvidia Drive products, including Orin and its successor Thor, for future EV models.

Foxconn plans to become a contract manufacturer of automated and autonomous AI equipped EVs using the upcoming Drive Hyperion 9 platform which includes Thor and new sensor architecture.

Orin has now been selected for use by 25 global automakers, Nvidia said.

Already a tier-one manufacturer of Orin powered electronic control units (ECUs), Foxconn will also manufacture ECUs based on Thor, when available.

The upcoming Thor "superchip" has AI capability first deployed in Grace CPUs and Hopper and Ada Lovelace architecture-based GPUs and is expected to deliver 2,000 teraflops of compute power.

Unveiled last year, Hyperion 9 is the latest Nvidia modular development platform and reference architecture for automated and autonomous vehicles. Once powered by Thor, it will integrate sensor architecture for level 3 urban and level 4 highway autonomous.
