Geely Holding plans to begin pilot operations for solid-state batteries (SSBs) in vehicles across its brands starting in 2027.
Geely says it can achieve an energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg with SSBs. Such an energy density could allow electric vehicles to achieve ranges over 1,000 kilometres.
Geely has said it is developing its SSBs in several variants with varying energy densities with the highest-performance version reaching up to 500 Wh/kg.
The higher energy density could make it possible to store significantly more energy in a vehicle without increasing the battery size.
Geely has said it has begun real-world validation of SSB technology with pilot deployment across the group’s brand portfolio scheduled to follow starting in 2027.
Geely Automobile Holdings reported record sales of more than 1.42 million vehicles in the first half of 2026 and its sales are spread across multiple brands including Zeekr, Polestar, Geely and Volvo Cars.
Geely is also working with Dow Chemical Company on the SSB project, with Dow developing a solid-state cell adhesive - a crucial element in the tech.
Although pilot SSB rollout across unspecified Geely brands is envisaged by Geely for 2027, there is no news of a mass-production schedule yet.
Chinese battery giant CATL and a number of Chinese OEMs are also working on plans for SSB technologies.
