A December diesel car share of new car sales in Western Europe of 12.1%
(-1pp MoM) saw the full-year share settle at 14% which is 1.8 percentage points below the 2023 outturn.

1.62 million diesel cars were sold in the region which is 210k units fewer than hit the roads in 2023. Since the start of 2023, the decline in diesel has been very stable, losing three percentage points of share per year.

A strong December for BEV sales, especially in the UK where OEMs were attempting to meet ZEV sales targets, resulted in a poor month for ICE sales. A similar effect can be expected across EU markets in late 2025 as OEMs strive to meet this year’s tougher average CO2 emissions targets.

SUVs were the most-represented bodytype within the region’s diesel car sales with 51% of pan-Europe deliveries in 2024. The medium sized SUV was the most popular body/size combination for diesel sales overall with C-segment and above dominating diesel car sales in the region to the extent of 96%, diesel having all but disappeared from the B-segment and below.
