Didi Autonomous Driving has begun fully driverless service trials of its next-generation R2 Robotaxi in designated demonstration zones across Beijing and Guangzhou.

The R2, a joint development between Didi Autonomous Driving and GAC Aion, was purpose-built for robotaxi operations with international markets in mind.

It is built on Didi's Level 4 autonomous driving stack, integrating 33 sensors with a central computing platform that merges three domains to enhance perception and handle more complex driving scenarios.

The cabin, according to the company, has been designed with rear-seat occupants as the focus, incorporating seats that adjust to a high-angle position and a 17.3in entertainment display mounted on the ceiling.

The company said: “it has an AI voice interaction system that allows riders to complete PIN verification and start the trip, adjust the air conditioning, open the windows and control the ambient lighting through voice commands.”

Further features are planned for future rollout, including a screen on the vehicle's exterior for interaction, customisable settings for cabin temperature and lighting tone, and a locating system that uses horn signals and voice prompts to help passengers identify the vehicle.

Since its delivery in January, the R2 has undergone on-road testing in Guangzhou, Beijing, Shenzhen and other cities in China.

The company added: “As R2 enters fully driverless service trials, Didi Autonomous Driving will continue advancing its Robotaxi technology and optimizing its services around riders' needs. The company remains committed to responsible technological innovation, bringing safe, intelligent and convenient autonomous mobility experience to more users.”

The partnership between the two companies goes back to May 2023, when Didi Autonomous Driving broadened its collaboration with GAC Aion to establish a joint venture focused on mass-producing electric robotaxis.

The venture, called “AIDI”, represented a move towards large-scale production and commercial rollout of L4 autonomous electric vehicles.
