Changan Automobile has made its official debut at the São Paulo Auto Show with a dedicated brand launch event, signalling the Chinese automaker’s formal entry into Brazil.

As part of the launch, Changan has signed a cooperation agreement with Brazilian automotive group CAOA, to jointly handle distribution and manufacturing in the country.

The companies plan to develop a full local value chain that encompasses research and development (R&D), production and after-sales support.

According to the companies, joint R&D activities have been underway for more than two years to adapt products to Brazilian usage conditions and customer requirements.

More than 300 engineers from China and Brazil are currently involved in co-development work, using over 100 test vehicles in both markets.

Testing has included bench trials, proving-ground evaluations and road use, with a reported accumulated test mileage exceeding a million kilometres.

At the show, Changan-controlled brand Avatr was presented to the Brazilian public, with models highlighting the marque’s focus on design and digital technologies.

The Avatr line is intended to anchor Changan’s entry, with further global models to follow, adjusted to local preferences.

Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen has been appointed brand ambassador for CAOA Changan in Brazil.

Changan describes the Brazilian launch as a key step in its international “Vast Ocean Plan”, under which it intends to deepen local R&D, manufacturing and service capabilities in the country and roll out products configured for Brazilian users.

Last year, Changan announced plans to enter the European market.

The company has said it will begin its European push with the all-electric SUV Changan Deepal 507 in the fourth quarter of 2024, with the goal of building a presence across major European markets by 2028.
