China’s BYD Auto has launched a new flagship battery-powered SUV under its Dynasty brand, the Da Tang (Great Tang), as the manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEVs) increases its focus on-high value segments of the market amid intensifying price competition from a growing number of local brands.

The new full-size SUV is equipped with BYD's second-generation Blade batteries, with the entry-level model fitted with a 106 kWh battery pack, while other variants are equipped with 130 kWh battery packs. The Da Tang rear-wheel drive (RWD) models come with a choice of 300 kW and 370 kW single motors, while the all-wheel drive dual motor models have a maximum combined power output of 585 kW.

The Da Tang range has a 1,000-volt high-voltage architecture and features flash-charging technology, allowing the batteries to be charged from 10% to 97% in under ten minutes at the company’s 6,700 flash charging stations in 321 Chinese cities.

The entry-level Da Tang RWD model has a driving range of 800 km on a single charge and is priced at CNY 239,900 (US$ 35,450), while the top-spec AWD model has a driving range of 950 km and is priced at CNY 309,900 (US$ 45,750). BYD said it had received 150,000 pre-orders for the Da Tang range ahead of its launch.

The AWD model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h, while the rear-wheel-drive model hits 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds.
