BYD April NEV sales fall 26% year-on-year

BYD has posted April 2026 production and sales results that showed year-on-year (YoY) declines across its new energy vehicle (NEV) segments.

Total NEV production in April 2026 was 322,298 units, down 28.6% YoY, while sales were 321,123 units, a fall of 26%.

For the year to date, production amounted to 1.03 million units, compared with 1.44 million units in the same period a year earlier.

Sales reached 1.02 million units, versus 1.38 million units in the prior-year period.

Passenger vehicle production fell 28.63% year-on-year to 317,244 units, and sales declined 26.17% to 314,100 units.

Within passenger vehicles, battery electric vehicle production dropped 27.79% to 159,264 units and sales decreased 23.65% to 156,944 units.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle production was down 29.34% to 157,980 units, while sales fell 28.24% to 157,156 units.

Commercial vehicle production came to 5,054 units, down 24.22% YoY, and sales declined 16.62% to 7,023 units.

Bus production and sales both rose 23.54% to 440 units. Other commercial vehicle categories posted declines in both production and sales.

The company reported NEV export volume of 135,098 units for April 2026.

Installed capacity of NEV power batteries and energy storage batteries was approximately 20.977 GWh for the month.

Cumulative installed capacity for 2026 reached approximately 81.192 GWh.

Last month, BYD reported a 55.4% year-on-year fall in first-quarter net profit attributable to shareholders, with revenue down and finance costs higher.

In a regulatory filing, the company said operating revenue for January to March declined 11.82% to 150.22bn yuan ($21.97bn).

Operating profit dropped to 4.70bn yuan from 11.02bn yuan.

During the same month, the company said that, following its passenger vehicle performance in the first quarter of 2026, it was entering the UK light commercial vehicle segment.
