BW expands chip supply deal

SiC said to increase power density and efficiency

Luke Martin July 19 2023

BorgWarner (BW) and Onsemi have announced an expanded deal for silicon carbide (SiC) technology now valued at US$1bn.

The supplier plans to integrate EliteSiC 1200V and 750V power devices into its Viper power modules.

BW claims its EV silicon carbide traction inverters provide “higher efficiency, better cooling performance, and faster charging rates in a more compact package” compared to rivals'.

SiC provides increased power density and higher efficiency, extending EV range and performance.

Stefan Demmerle, BW PowerDrive Systems, head, said: “Onsemi's continuous investment in ramping up SiC manufacturing capacity across its supply chain gives us confidence in our ability to meet growing demand.”
