Bentley, part of Volkswagen Group, has revealed more details of its first fully electric vehicle, the Bentley Torcal.

The luxury SUV becomes the fourth model line in the brand’s range, joining the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga.

The launch will mark a significant step in Bentley’s move towards electrification.

The carmaker said the Torcal is the “most powerful” and “fastest-accelerating” production model it has ever built.

The vehicle’s performance has been developed to stay within comfort limits for occupants, positioning it as the latest interpretation of the company’s grand touring approach.

The company linked the Torcal to a long-standing performance tradition built around torque, spanning four generations of powertrains: the 4½-litre Blower, the Speed Six, the 6.75-litre V8 and the twin-turbocharged W12.

According to Bentley, those powertrains shared an ability to deliver performance in an understated way, which it presents as central to more than 100 years of grand tourer manufacturing.

With the Torcal, Bentley said electric propulsion carries that philosophy forward, with instant torque delivery allowing continuous acceleration from a standstill to overtaking speeds.

The company added that the SUV has been designed to provide immediate response in all driving conditions while maintaining the refinement expected by its customers, rather than prioritising outright performance over comfort.

Bentley has not yet disclosed output figures for the powertrain, pricing or a launch date. The company said more technical information will be released before the Torcal goes on sale.

In August, Bentley said it had developed a new “curation engine” for the Torcal that can shape journeys around “how you want to feel”.

The company said it has created four settings for different moods and situations: Bentley Mode, Comfort Mode, Sport Mode and Refresh Mode. The system is based on sensory neuroscience, with each element designed to operate together.
