Audi Sport has introduced the RS 5, its “first” high-performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model.
The new RS 5 range marks the debut of an electrified drivetrain in Audi’s RS production lineup, delivering a combined output of 470kW.
The system integrates a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor, hybridised eight-speed transmission and rear transaxle within what Audi describes as its first modular electrified setup for an RS model.
The electric motor also replaces a conventional 12-volt starter by initiating combustion engine start-up.
Its combustion engine produces 375kW and works with a 130kW electric motor to deliver up to 825Nm of torque.
Power is supplied by a 25.9kWh battery, enabling up to 84km of electric driving range, rising to 87km in urban use.
Audi Sport states the drivetrain allows acceleration from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and offers an optional top speed of 285km/h.
Audi Sport managing director Rolf Michl said: “The RS 5 and its innovative drive concept mark the beginning of a new era for our RS models. They bring a new level of dynamics to the driving characteristics our customers love and further improve day-to-day use value thanks to all-electric driving and innovative technologies. A new interpretation of the true RS experience.”
Audi Sport has introduced a revised quattro system with Dynamic Torque Control for the RS 5.
The configuration uses a rear transaxle and electromechanical torque vectoring, alongside a preloaded centre differential for longitudinal torque distribution.
The rear differential can redistribute torque between the rear wheels within milliseconds, with control updates every 5ms (200 Hz).
Both body styles, sedan and avant, are around 9cm wider than the A5 at the front and rear axles and feature flared wheel arches, a honeycomb Singleframe grille, aerodynamic rear diffuser and RS sport exhaust.
Chassis revisions include RS-specific axles, twin-valve adaptive dampers, RS-tuned steering, 20- and 21-inch wheels and optional ceramic brakes.
An optional Audi Sport package adds revised bumpers, 21-inch wheels, RS sport exhaust and a higher top speed.
According to the company, the RS 5 Sedan is priced from €106,200 ($124,911) in Germany, while the RS 5 Avant starts at €107,850.
Production takes place in Neckarsulm, Germany, with European customer deliveries scheduled from summer 2026.
