Woven Alpha, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation’s Woven Planet Holdings, has signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) to jointly develop improved vehicle safety systems by combining their respective Automated Mapping Platform (AMP) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology.
This follows a similar agreement signed earlier this month with Hino Motors and Isuzu Motors with Woven Alpha looking to expand the use of its technology within the global commercial vehicle industry.
AMP is a connected crowd-sourced software platform that supports the creation, development and distribution of high definition (HD) maps that could help improve the safety of automated driving systems. AMP provides high-precision data-driven maps by using vehicle fleet data and satellite imagery.
The AMP map includes several layers of data-rich information comprising road characteristics such as road lanes, curves, topography, road signs, traffic lights and other objects. It creates an accurate representation of the road while also keeping it updated.
Under its latest agreement, Woven Alpha will explore the technical requirements of using AMP in combination with MFTBC’s ADAS and also the advantages of using AMP over existing road mapping systems.
The two companies have identified at least 10 potential upgrades of the ADAS system using AMP. The first will focus on the application of AMP to increase the accuracy of MFTBC’s Entering Curve Speed Warning (ECSW) system used in its heavy-duty Super Great trucks.
