Wabco Holdings, the commercial vehicles component supplier, has opened its new Global Technology and Innovation Centre in Hanover, Germany.

Significantly expanding Wabco's global product development and engineering capabilities, the US$30m facility will develop pioneering technology to support the industry's migration towards increasingly autonomous, connected and electric commercial vehicles.

The 11,500 sq m (124,000 sq ft) facility includes workspace for 420 employees as well as visiting engineering project teams from across the world. As the supplier's largest R&D hub, the new centre will fulfil a central role within an integrated network of product development and engineering centres that now spans four continents. This one will focus on advanced safety and efficiency systems for trucks, buses and trailers.

Jacques Esculier, chairman and CEO, said: "This facility represents a major step to further enhance capacity and capabilities in advanced systems development and integration. By connecting this new hub to the rest of our world, we are optimally positioned to anticipate and accelerate development of the technologies necessary for higher levels of vehicle autonomy, connectivity and electrification that our customers seek globally."

Christian Brenneke, chief technology officer, said: This new centre will be at the vanguard of our next generation of autonomous vehicle control and advanced driver assistance technologies, such as active braking, active steering, and electronic stability control."
