Volkswagen Group China has announced the first half-year deliveries for 2018: with its two Chinese joint venture partners, SAIC Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen, the Group delivered over 1.99m (1.83m, +9.2%) vehicles to customers in mainland China and Hong Kong, including 80,300 imported vehicles.

“The performance for the first half of 2018 is very positive, with almost 2 million customers placing their trust in us, resulting in nearly double-digit growth, which provides us with a confident outlook for the rest of the year,” said Prof Dr Jochem Heizmann, member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft as well as president and CEO of Volkswagen Group China.

“Our goal is to deliver the products and services that our Chinese customers want. Our strong SUV offencive has been very positively received, alongside a robust performance of our sedan models. At Volkswagen Group China, we are also always looking ahead at the possibilities for e-mobility and intelligent, connected technologies,” Heizmann added.

The lower import tariffs on cars and certain car parts, which came into effect on 1 July impacted deliveries on the overall market in June/July, because some consumers postponed their purchasing decisions.

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand delivered 1,483,200 (1,395,500, +6.3%) units to ‘remain the number one choice among Chinese car buyers during the first six months of this year’, VW said. The brand is introducing a total of 9 new models in China in 2018, including new generations of 4 well-established sedan models. The portfolio is further strengthened in 2018 with 4 new SUVs, including 3 additional models.

In China, with a total of 306,600 cumulative deliveries since January, Audi exceeded last year’s reference figure by 20.3%. In June, Audi achieved substantial growth with the Audi A4L (+29.1% to 12,800 cars). In the first six months, sales of this midsize model were up by 65.1% year-on-year. Since the start of the year, around one in four Chinese customers opted for the long version of the A4 – with over 74,700 cars sold, it is the best-selling Audi model this year.
