Volkswagen India has begun Tiguan assembly at its Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra. The model was first shown locally at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2016 and will go on sale later this year, taking the brand into the growing SUV segment.

Michael Mayer, director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said: "We are delighted to introduce one of our most successful global products to the Indian market. The Tiguan will be our premium SUV offering and will cater to the unceasing demand in the segment."

The India specification Tiguan has a two-litre TDI turbodiesel engine with seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. VW claims the second generation Tiguan is the undisputed best-selling SUV in its class in Europe.

Worldwide, VW sold over 2.8m first generation Tiguans in 170 countries and has seen further growth with the second generation. The automaker has said customers like the high seating position combined with numerous safety and comfort features.

"At around 30%, SUVs are the fastest growing body style worldwide. The A-SUV segment alone, to which the new Tiguan belongs, is growing tremendously. Forecasts for the next four years call for further global growth of more than 2m vehicles," VW said at the 2016 international media launch for the redesigned generation.
