Volvo Trucks is reportedly in discussion with Samsung to develop new generation batteries for freight trucks powered by electricity, according to a Korean newspaper.

In an interview with The Korea Herald, Claes Nilsson, president of Volvo Trucks, said the company has been in talks with the Smsung SDI to introduce electric trucks.

“We are already collaborating with Samsung when it comes to battery technology,” he told the newsaper.

“Where we are using the fully electric drive lines today is on the bus side. But as we move forward, we need (full electric lines for) trucks as well and yes, Korean industry, when it comes to semiconductors and battery and etc, are very advanced,” he said.

Electrification technology is a considerable technical challenge when it comes to heavy duty freight vehicles that travel long distances, with battery performance and weight constraints a particular issue.
