Volvo Cars UK said it new XC40 "urban SUV" is now available to order in the UK with prices starting at GBP27,905 for the T3 Momentum version.
The new range is the latest to use the Geely owned automaker's Drive-E engines and the UK model line will offer front- or all-wheel drive, and manual or automatic gearboxes.

Three petrol and two diesel engines will initially be available, with power ranging from 150 to 250 hp and all engines are two litre, four-cylinder units. The petrol engines are 156 hp T3, 190hp T4 and 247 hp T5 while the diesels are 150 hp D3 and 190hp D4. The T3 will be sold in the UK only with front wheel drive while the D3 will offer automatic transmission and all wheel drive as options. The T4, T5 and D4 will all come with both all wheel drive and automatic gearbox as standard.
Volvo has not yet released full technical details of these engines and promises: "Other powertrains will be offered later in the XC40's lifecycle". These are expected to be a T5 plug-in hybrid petrol-electric (different drivetrain to the larger XC60/XC90 T8) and an all-electric version in line with the automaker's recently announced electrification plan.
Entry-level Momentum trim variants have textile and vinyl upholstery and the option of a contrasting white roof and door mirrors, along with white and black alloy wheels.
Momentum spec also includes Sensus infotainment with a nine inch touch screen that works with the voice activated control system. Claimed class leading connectivity features include navigation with real time traffic information (RTTI) plus lifetime map updates, and three USB sockets. Sensus also allows access to a range of web apps including Spotify, TuneIn, Google Local Search and Yelp.

By GlobalDataThe On Call smartphone app and emergency assistance package is also standard range wide and allows remote control from a smartphone or smartwatch, such as locking and unlocking and, on automatic versions, starting the engine to pre-heat or cool the cabin. It can also automatically alert the emergency services if the car is involved in an accident and use the inbuilt GPS to direct first responders to the location.
Also standard are LED headlights, dual zone climate control with 'CleanZone' air filtration, a 12.3" active TFT configurable driver's information display and rear parking sensors. Eighteen inch alloy wheels standard, with sizes and styles up to 21" optional.
Claimed sector first standard safety equipment includes City Safety, the automatic emergency braking system that can detect pedestrians, cyclists and large animals, and Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which warns if the cars moves out of lane into the path of an oncoming vehicle and provides steering assistance to guide it back into the correct lane.
Sporty R-Design versions add a gloss black front grille and front and rear lower bumper sections, a black roof and door mirrors, and dual integrated exhaust pipes. Uprated sports suspension and 18" diamond cut/matt black alloy wheels, leather/nubuck upholstery, front seat cushion extensions, a perforated leather steering wheel and gear knob, and aluminium dashboard inlays are also included.
Luxury Inscription versions have leather faced upholstery, power tailgate, front parking sensors, power driver's seat, driftwood interior inlays and chrome exterior highlights. Automatic versions gain a crystal gear lever from Swedish crystal glassware maker Orrefors.
Highly specified Pro versions (aimed at UK 'user chooser' fleet customers) are an option with all trim variants. Momentum Pro models include a powered driver's seat, heated front seats and windscreen, plus active bending headlights with adaptive shadow technology that block out part of the headlights' beam to avoid dazzling vehicles in front.
R-Design Pro models also get 20" alloy wheels while the Inscription Pro has 19" wheels and a power passenger seat.
The optional, range wide Xenium package adds a powered tilt and slide panoramic glass sunroof, a 360-degree surround view parking camera plus Park Assist Pilot which includes automatic parallel and 90 degree parking.
Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous drive feature, is also optional across the range. It assists with the steering (up to 80 mph/130km/h) and takes care of the acceleration and braking to keep the car within lane markings and at the desired speed or distance from any vehicle in front.
Other options include wireless mobile phone charging, Smartphone Integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – and a Harman Kardon sound system that combines 13 speakers, advanced sound-processing software and an output of 1,200W.
The first UK market deliveries will be special launch T5 and D4 First Editions, based on the R-Design Pro versions but with even more equipment as standard. Highlights include the Xenium pack, Pilot Assist, power tailgate with hands free opening and closing, heated rear seats, wireless mobile phone charging and the Harmon Kardon sound system.
The optional Care by Volvo package, for one monthly payment, covers car rental, scheduled maintenance, insurance and roadside assistance, along with a range of concierge services that will expand. Care by Volvo will be available as an introductory offer on special T5 and D4 Momentum versions for GBP629 per month for 24 months and will be offered on other XC40 variants later.
