New vehicle sales in Vietnam increased by over to 26% to 10,116 units in March, from 8,002 units in the same month of last year, according to data released by the Vietnam Automotive Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

Cumulative four-month sales were more than 28% higher at 34,284 units, from 26,694 units previously, driven by strong demand for light passenger vehicles. Sales of passenger cars, SUVs and MPVs increased by over 34% to 20,456 units in the first four months of the year, compared with 15,264 units a year earlier. Commercial vehicle sales increased by close to 19% to 13,051 units in this period, from 10,990 units previously.

Toyota led the overall market in the first four months of the year with sales rising by close to 12.7% to 10,428 units. Truong Hai (Thaco), which assembles Kias and various other commercial vehicles, reported a 20% rise in sales to 8,520 units.

Third-placed Ford saw its sales rise by 51% to 3,360 units, reflecting strong demand for the Transit minibus/van and the Ranger pickup truck; while Honda’s sales increased almost fourfold to 2,274, thanks to strong demand for the City and CRV models.
