New vehicle sales in Vietnam jumped by 33.6% to 11,631 units in December, from 8,709 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Vietnam Automotive Manufacturers Association.

The market last month was driven by a sharp increase in passenger vehicle sales – up by 38% year on year to 7,407 units. Commercial vehicles sales also began to contribute significantly to the market’s recovery, with volumes rising by 25% to 3,954 units.

Full year vehicle sales increased by 19.9% to 96,692 units, compared with 80,652 units previously. Passenger vehicle sales increased by 32.6% to 58,140 units, from 43,832 units in 2012; while commercial vehicle sales were just 3% higher at 38,552 units.

Toyota led the market last year with sales rising by 33.5% to 33,288 units. Truong Hai (Thaco), which assembles Kias and various other commercial vehicles, reported sales of 24,214 units – which were just slightly better than in the previous year.

Ford outperformed the market thanks mainly to the popularity of its new Ranger pickup truck and strong demand for the Transit van. Its sales jumped by 70% to 8,166 units; followed by GM which reported an 8% sales drop to 5,178 units.
