New vehicle sales in Vietnam jumped by 20.9% to 8,900 units in January, from 7,363 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Vietnam Automotive Manufacturers Association.
The market last month was driven higher by a sharp increase in sales of MPVs and SUVs with volumes rising by 74% to 2,724 units. The biggest gains in this segment were made by the Toyota Innova and Fortuner models, the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX5.
Passenger car sales grew by a more moderate 9.3% to 3,586 units in January, while commercial vehicle sales were unchanged at 2,385 units.
Toyota led the overall vehicle market in January with sales rising by 15.6% to 3,145 units, while Truong Hai (Thaco), which assembles Kias and various other commercial vehicles, reported an 18.3% drop in sales to 1,499 units.
Third-placed Ford saw its sales rise by 38% to 954 units, while Honda moved into fourth spot with a 354% jump in sales to 803 units.
