New vehicle sales in Vietnam declined by 17.4% year on year to 9,141 units in September, from peak levels of 11,071 units a year earlier – according to the Vietnam Automotive Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

This was the second consecutive month of sharp decline and put the January-September total firmly into negative territory, reversing the gains made earlier in the year. The cumulative total fell by 2.8% to 78,179 units, from 80, 374 units in the same period of 2009.

The passenger car segment was the worst performer in September, with volumes falling by 21.3% to 2,754 units although, cumulative sales were still up by 5.8% at 22,390 units. Sales of SUVs and MPVs combined were down by 19% in September at 1,978 units and 14% lower cumulatively at 16,288 units while commercial vehicle sales fell by 14% to 4,409 units in September and by 2% to 39,501 units cumulatively.

Toyota continued to lead the market in the January-September period with sales rising by 11% to 21,611 units, followed by Truong Hai with 17,607 units (+21%) while third-placed VinaMotor reported a 21% drop in sales to 9,040 units in the nine month period.
