Honda Motor has started construction of its first automobile assembly plant in Vietnam, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The $US60 million plant is scheduled to begin operating in July next year and is expected to annually produce 10,000 Civic sedans for Vietnam’s market, AP said, citing the state-controlled Youth newspaper.

AP said the plant, located in the northern Vinh Phuc province, some 25 miles (40 kilometres) north of Hanoi, is Honda’s first auto assembly plant in the communist country though the company currently produces motorcycles in Vietnam.

Toyota, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and BMW also assemble cars in Vietnam and last year sold 40,000 vehicles there, the Associated Press noted.
