Venezuela’s car market should shortly see dual-fuel cars offered, the energy and oil ministry has said.

The new cars will be equipped with dual-fuel engines able to operate with both natural gas and petrol.

A government resolution, published in the state gazette in July 2008, envisages the sale of such cars as of April 2009 and ruled that companies should achieve a 30% share of those cars in their total car production and imports by the end of 2009. The share should be increased to 40% in 2010 and to 50% in 2011.

Analysts note that gas infrastructure could act as a constraint to the government’s plans.
