American retail giant Wal-Mart, owner of the UK Asda supermarket chain, is to launch a pilot project where it will sell used cars at five of its branches in Houston, Texas.
Part of the company#;s one-stop-shopping policy, the aims it for it to sell vehicles without haggling and a prices that are below the going rate.
Forecourts will be set up next to existing Wal-Mart shops, and will be named Price 1 Auto Store. The six month test will start next month, (May), and will be operated in partnership with Asbury Automotive Group, one of the largest US dealership networks.
Wal-Mart#;s diversification has already seen it offer on-site petrol stations, cafes and bank branches.
An Asda spokesman said that the UK operation had no plans to sell new or used cars through the company’s UK supermarkets.
“We wouldn’t rule it out but it’s not something were currently looking into,” he said.
