US government records show the number of recalled Toyota vehicles has doubled this year.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Toyota had 2.2m vehicles recalled before 17 November, compared with 1.1m in 2004, according to USA Today. Toyota responded that its records show 2.4m vehicles recalled this year.
The recalls are the most for Toyota in the US in a single year. It recalled just 210,000 vehicles in 2003.
Automakers and analysts said that with more vehicles using shared parts or platforms, recall data does not always reflect a vehicle’s quality or safety attributes, USA Today noted.
The paper added that, overall, the number of vehicles recalled to dealerships for repairs was down considerably in 2005 – totalling about 16.6m in mid-November, compared with a record 30.8 million the previous year.
