Police told the Associated Press the shooter walked into the plant with a double-barrel shotgun, yelling and demanding that some of the body shop’s supervisors come to the office area.

The shooting happened in the plant’s body shop office about 8:45 pm (2.45am GMT), the report said.

One victim died in hospital. Police earlier had told AP one victim was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest and that two others were less seriously injured, but a hospital spokeswoman would not tell the news agency which victim died.

The gunman, identified as Myles Meyers, 54, of Toledo, shot himself in the head, police told AP.

DaimlerChrysler spokeswoman Mary Beth Halprin told the Associated Press the gunman was disciplined recently for a minor infraction, but could not provide more details.

Police reportedly said employees were running out of the plant when they arrived on the scene.

The plant, which opened in 1997, employs almost 4,500 people on two shifts, the Associated Press added.
