Spatial Inc., the world’s leading developer of Web-hosted engineering application services, e-frastructure, interoperability solutions and open, component 3D modeling technology, announced today that its PlanetCAD(tm) division is partnering with ANX eBusiness Corp., an SAIC company, to provide the 3Dshare.com(tm) model translation and healing solution to SAIC’s ANX® network service (ANX®) also known as the Advanced Network eXchange(tm) and the Automotive Network eXchange®.

With this alliance, Spatial will be the first to offer engineering data quality solutions to trading partners within this secure, managed extranet.

“Through our alliance with Spatial, ANX eBusiness Corp. is demonstrating its commitment to offering solutions that streamline and enhance the vehicle design and engineering processes of the ANX® trading partner community,” said Steve Shapiro, vice president and general manager for Application Services on the ANX® network.

The ANX® network provides a secure and reliable global network infrastructure that replaces complex legacy networks and facilitates the re-engineering of supply chains. The ANX® network, introduced by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) in 1995 and in service since late 1998, now connects more than 500 trading partners electronically, allowing them to collaborate on product design and development; solicit and process orders; and facilitate just-in-time manufacturing and post shipping schedules. In addition to SAIC, current ANX® certified service providers include Ameritech, AT&T, BCE Emergis, EDS, Ideal Technologies and MCI WorldCom.

“Having 3Dshare.com software running on the ANX® network puts some teeth into the integrity of the data traveling throughout the supply chain,” said Don Hedeen, the former director of the ANX® program for AIAG. “Interoperability and downstream use of design data cost the automotive industry more than $1 billion per year. Collaborative engineering solutions, including those offered by Spatial, offer the promise of major reductions in process costs and cycle times.”

3Dshare.com is a Web-based service offered by PlanetCAD enabling the automated translation and repair of 3D CAD files to streamline the digital manufacturing supply chain. Its thousands of members have already proven that 3Dshare.com’s proprietary technology offers a critical missing link in the digital manufacturing and engineering processes by enabling interoperability of data throughout the extended manufacturing enterprise.

AIAG in a 1998 report entitled “Best Practices in Supply Chain Product Development,” revealed that the “highest priority issue (affecting the effectiveness of best practices in the automotive supply chain) was concern about the quality of product data, or rather, the lack thereof, which is directly related to the usefulness of that data for purposes beyond basic product representations.” The report went on to note that “these kinds of product data quality problems lead to increased cost and time delays.”

“The partnership between SAIC and PlanetCAD is a tremendous benefit for the ANX® network and 3Dshare.com customers,” said Bruce Morgan, president and CEO of Spatial. “The ANX® network allows the delivery of 3Dshare.com interoperability solution at the extremely high level of security that major automotive OEMs and suppliers require.”

This strategic alliance with SAIC means that 3Dshare.com and other services from PlanetCAD will be available via a secure link into SAIC’s ANX® network where members can safely upload 3D CAD models to streamline their manufacturing design processes in real-time.
