US regulators have decided not to reopen an investigation of Firestone Steeltex tyres, a source familiar with the decision told Reuters on Monday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been weighing whether 27.5 million heavy duty Steeltex R4S, R4SII and A/T tyres should be investigated again for a potential recall, the news agency noted.

Reuters said an earlier probe by the safety agency found no defects and the source said regulators have decided against reopening that case and will post their decision shortly on the NHTSA website.

Steeltex remains the subject of a class action lawsuit that accuses Firestone parent, Japan-based Bridgestone Corporation, of concealing Steeltex defects, Reuters said.
