Domestic and foreign car makers resumed full production at US assembly and component plants on Monday, according to the Detroit News, which noted that power restrictions in Canada, however, forced many manufacturers to curtail production or idle some factories in Ontario.
The paper said the plants had been down since late Thursday when a massive blackout knocked out power in several states and parts of Ontario.
General Motors spokesman Dan Flores told the Detroit News that production at Pontiac Truck Assembly and the body shop at its Orion Assembly plant started up again on Sunday night while the other US GM plants affected by the blackout went back on line on Monday with “no significant issues”.
Ford and DaimlerChrysler also resumed full production at their US plants with no problems, the companies told the newspaper.
But the Detroit News said the situation is more tenuous, and potentially costly, in Canada because the premier of Ontario has requested large electric users to reduce power consumption by 50% from 8am to 8pm until the province’s power plants are ramped up.

By GlobalDataGM told the Detroit News it would maintain full production at its Oshawa truck plant where the popular and highly profitable Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck is built but, on Monday, its Oshawa 1 car plant that builds the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo operated only on the third shift but was expected to add a partial day shift on Tuesday.
Spokeswoman Lauren More told the newspaper that Ford of Canada closed its Oakville, Ontario, headquarters and eliminated the day shift at its assembly plant there – the plant is launching Ford’s new minivan, the Freestar.
The Detroit News said DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler group is maintaining full output at its Brampton, Ontario, plant which produces the Dodge Intrepid, Chrysler 300M and Chrysler Concorde while Chrysler’s Windsor assembly plant was to resume production at midnight Monday (4am Tuesday GMT).
