Mitsubishi Motors North America has appointed David Schembri executive vice president of sales and marketing effective immediately.
A company statement said Schrembi is moving to his new post following more than 30 years of corporate automotive marketing experience at Mercedes-Benz USA, Volkswagen of America and American Motors Corporation.
During 11 years with Mercedes, Schembri helped launched the SL, E-Class, CLK, AWD C-Class and Maybach luxury sedan line. He also led the development and implementation of a certified pre-owned and remarketing programme as well as the regional dealer advertising programme.
“I am extremely proud to join Mitsubishi Motors North America,” Schembri said in the statement. “Mitsubishi Motors is emerging out of a tough turnaround period as a stronger and better company, with the best and most exciting products it has ever offered. This, combined with an outstanding dealer and corporate organisation, provides for a strong foundation for future growth. I see tremendous opportunity with this brand.”
The Car Connection (TCC) website noted that Schembri had been head of marketing at Mercedes-Benz North America, but was replaced and shifted to parts and service and, from there, was named to run marketing at smart USA. But, TCC added, the future of smart’s launch in the US is “up in the air”.

By GlobalDataThe website said that Schembri has been leading a search for an ad agency, but DaimlerChrysler is rethinking the launch timing and product line it will come to the US with, if it comes at all.
TCC also said that, at Mitsubishi, Schembri replaces Ian Beavis, who resigned in December. Schembri, 51, reportedly is known for his high energy and has a good track record in dealer relations, which, the website noted, is a critical need for Mitsubishi going forward in the US.
