Meritor Suspension Systems Company is to close its Sheffield, England, stabiliser bar plant with the loss of 170 jobs, following the conclusion of a 90-day mass redundancy consultation process with its union, Amicus-AEEU.
The closure will affect 140 Amicus-AEEU union represented workers and 30 staff employees but not the 70-person industrial spring, engine valve spring, and tool businesses.
“This is an undesirable and difficult position for our business, our customers, and our employees. Unfortunately, this low-margin operation could not recover from rising steel prices and surcharges,” said MSSC president and general manager Steve Scgalski. “We are working with our customers to support product deliveries until alternative source arrangements can be made.”
In addition to the Sheffield facility, MSSC produces coil springs, stabiliser bars and torsion bars in North America with manufacturing plants in Milton, and Chatham, Ontario, Canada, as well as Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in the United States.
