Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA), in conjunction with its streaming media partner, Microsoft Windows Media, has been recognised as one of the ten leading corporations to implement streaming technology by the Aberdeen Group, a technology market consulting and research company.

In its research report, ‘What Works: Ten Significant Streaming Implementations of 2001’, the Aberdeen Group selected ten companies and their respective streaming media suppliers as leaders in successfully implementing streaming media technology to contribute significant value to their businesses.

MBUSA uses streaming media technology to conduct an e-Learning and online certification program for over 5,000 dealership technicians nationwide to train technicians on all current and past Mercedes-Benz vehicles — from diagnostics and disassembly procedures to general maintenance and repairs.

“Our need to communicate with our ever-growing force of technicians has increased over recent years as our product line has dramatically expanded and our sales have nearly tripled,” said Mark Juron, general manager, Product Management, Parts and Service. “Streaming media allows us to provide the best quality service for our customers through boosting our ability to provide our dealerships and technicians with the consistent, timely training and communications they need to serve the customers.”

The online program, complete with coursework, product documentation and video demonstrations, supplements in-person training, and can be completed at the technicians’ discretion, including evening and weekends. MBUSA says that online training reduces technicians’ time away from servicing vehicles.

MBUSA estimates that as a result of using streaming media to train their technicians, the company and its dealer network have reduced training and certification costs by more than $1.7 million in the first year alone.

“This case study strongly supports Aberdeen’s research that corporate training is a primary driver of streaming media initiatives. While many corporations are just discovering the technology’s value, Mercedes-Benz USA is already ahead of the game, leading the automotive industry by maximizing this technology to bring significant and quantifiable benefits to their business,” said Michael Hoch, senior analyst and lead author of the research study.
