Lear Corporation (NYSE: LEA) today announced that its Walker, Mich. (USA) seat track manufacturing and assembly plant has successfully developed and implemented an Environmental Management System in conformance to ISO 14001, a worldwide recognized Environmental Management Systems Standard.

“We are especially pleased by the certification of the Lear Walker plant because it is the first Structural Systems Operations plant within Lear’s Manufacturing Operations Division to receive ISO 14001 certification,” said Lear Environmental Director Dr. Rebecca Spearot. “Lear’s participation in the ISO 14001 certification process is part of a worldwide effort to be proactive in identifying and addressing areas of potential environmental significance.”

ISO 14001 registration signifies that a location has met wide-ranging criteria dealing with stringent environmental management systems and practices that ensure cleaner and more sustainable operations. In order to achieve ISO 14001 certification, a plant must first identify the aspects of the operation’s activities, products and services that impact the environment and then develop objectives and targets to reduce that impact. The objectives and targets are monitored to demonstrate continual environmental improvement.

In earning ISO 14001 certification, the Lear Walker plant, located near the western Michigan city of Grand Rapids, was cited for its management of environmental aspects for products, activities and services associated with the manufacture and assembly of automotive seating products. The certification company ENTELA certified Lear Walker’s Environmental Management System as meeting the requirements of ISO 14001.

“By instituting a recycling program last year, we saved enough money to pay for our trash disposal, while simultaneously improving the environment,” said Scott French, Lear Walker Plant Manager.

Lear Walker’s 500 employees make seat adjusters for Chrysler, Toyota and Fiat and seat frames for Subaru and Dodge Durango. The location is also QS 9000 certified.
