Honda has announced that it will begin assembling its record-selling Accord model at its East Liberty plant in addition to Marysville, Ohio, where the vehicle is currently built.

The decision underlines the success that Honda has had with developing flexible manufacturing lines that can shift from assembly of one model to another in relatively short time. Honda said production at East Liberty where Civic and the Element light truck models are currently assembled, will begin early next year.

Honda said that beginning early in 2005, all three of its assembly lines – two at Marysville and one at East Liberty – will be capable of building the Accord. When the Accord goes into production early next year at East Liberty it will be introduced as a rolling model without a shutdown of the assembly line.
