General Motors will recall about 783,000 model year 2000-2001 Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero and Pontiac Grand Am cars to replace hazard warning switches. The recall involves vehicles built between February 1, 2000 and May 1, 2001, of which about 671,000 are in the US and 88,000 in Canada.

These vehicles have hazard warning switches that may malfunction because of exposure to rapid temperature changes and a soldering process which could cause the hazard warning and turn signal lights to work intermittently or not at all.

GM expects repair parts to be available during the first quarter of 2004 and will notify owners of a free replacement programme at dealers.
