United Auto Workers members at DaimlerChrysler’s Detroit Diesel plant have ratified a new contract that includes signing bonuses, improved benefits and more engine work at the facility, the UAW told the Associated Press (AP).

The new pact reportedly covers about 1,300 workers and expires on April 30, 2010 – it was approved by a 78% majority.

According to AP, the UAW said workers will receive a 3% signing bonus and 2% lump-sum payments in 2005, 2007 and 2009. Longer-term employees will receive 2% general wage increases in 2004, 2006 and 2008, while more recent recruits will receive an immediate $1 per hour raise and $1 per hour hikes in each year of the agreement.

The contract also calls for Detroit Diesel to add two engine platforms at the Redford Township plant, the UAW told the news agency. Workers also won improved pension and health care benefits, the UAW reportedly said, but it didn’t provide details.
