Duraswitch(R) Technology on Display at Mondial de l’Automobile

Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE: DPH – news) has been setting a new design direction for switch products with its decorative technologies, and now the company is working with Duraswitch® Industries Inc. (Amex: DRA – news) to combine next-generation electrical/electronic systems and switch technologies to provide the switching and electronic features that today’s automotive customers demand.

Delphi’s Packard Electric division will be showing customers the Duraswitch technology at the Mondial de l’Automobile here, demonstrating its knowledge of switches, switch packaging and manufacturing that will deliver this revolutionary switch technology to the automotive industry, as well as the non-automotive switch markets.

Delphi recently signed a licensing agreement with Duraswitch for exclusive rights to utilize and manufacture Duraswitch’s magnetically coupled switch technology for the automotive industry. Delphi’s diversified customer base and solid manufacturing footprint will help take Duraswitch global. The automotive switch market is valued at US $4 billion, with a 6.8 percent compounded average annual growth rate.

Duraswitch specializes in high-tech designs for human-machine interface technology. The company engineers and licenses custom flat panel and rotary electronic switches for the appliance, electronics and telecommunications industries.

“We’re very excited about the versatility of the Duraswitch technology,” said Roger Phillips, Delphi Packard Electric’s switch group manager. “As consumers and vehicle manufacturers demand increasingly complicated electronic vehicle systems, the newly formed Delphi-Duraswitch relationship will provide simple, value-engineered switch technology solutions.”

Delphi is a global supplier of switches, providing several major European customers with a variety of switches ranging from high-current hazard and ignition switches to electronic gear shift modules and power seat switches with integrated electronics.

Additionally, in conjunction with joint venture partner Daesung Electric Co., Delphi supplies Asian customers with a variety of switches ranging from door jamb and transmission inhibitor switches to power window/locks and stalk switches with integrated electronics.

Phillips said Delphi’s licensing agreement with Duraswitch enhances its extensive switch portfolio. The simplicity, dependability and durability of the Duraswitch technology makes it a natural for vehicle applications and compliments Delphi’s existing product line. The Duraswitch technology can be applied to any vehicle switch application, but is especially useful for the HVAC system, light, mirror, or entertainment system controls. Because the Duraswitch technology can be easily integrated into the vehicle system, there are many opportunities to replace existing switches with the cost-effective and reliable Duraswitch alternative.

“Delphi is positioned to supply customers, at all locations in the world, with stand-alone switches or switches custom designed to meet the needs of the most advanced multiplexed electrical/electronic systems of tomorrow,” Phillips added. “With the inclusion of Duraswitch technologies, Delphi can extend its capabilities to device control and human-machine interface.”
