Delphi has announced that it has secured eight new steering column contracts worth more than $335 million in annual sales revenue, or more than $1.6 billion over the life of the contracts. The contracts begin with 2003 model year vehicles across North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Delphi’s standard and new fine increment tilt energy absorbing columns are in production for a 2003 full size vehicle contract in the US. Delphi says that the new fine tilt increment technology coupled with energy absorbing features will also be utilised in the third contract won in the US for a future 2004 high volume midsize vehicle.

Two contracts in South America will feature Delphi’s non-adjustable and rake steering columns. Asia Pacific new business includes two contracts for Delphi’s fixed and adjustable energy absorbing columns for two 2003 models. Also in Asia Pacific, a 2004 model family-size car will feature Delphi’s non-adjustable steering column. In Europe, Delphi’s manually adjustable rake and telescope energy absorbing columns with intermediate shafts were sourced for a popular luxury mid-size car.

“Delphi’s advanced energy absorbing expertise is setting industry standards around the world,” stated Robert J. Remenar, president of Delphi Saginaw Steering Systems. “We’re leading the way in developing adaptive energy absorbing technology that helps vehicle manufacturers to meet or exceed new U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 regulations.”

FMVSS 208 requires protection for both smaller 5th percentile female drivers and larger 50th percentile male drivers in conditions with and without seat belts.
