Engineering Award for Arnage Red Label, Executive Appointment Also Announced
Spurred by robust demand for its Arnage Red Label saloon, Bentley Motor Cars, Inc. has registered a 35 percent advance in year-to-date North American sales, compared with the first nine months of 1999. For the period, Bentley sold 404 units — including 295 Arnage Red Labels — compared with a total of 300 for the year-earlier period.
“Bentley enthusiasts and new buyers alike have truly embraced the Red Label,” stated Alasdair Stewart, president of Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars. “More than 60 percent of new Bentleys sold this year have been ‘conquest’ sales, which is very encouraging as we continue to build the presence and visibility of the marque in North America.”
On a worldwide basis, Bentley Motor Cars tallied a 36 percent increase in nine-month sales to 1012 units, compared with 745 in the first nine months of 1999.
In addition to spearheading sales, the Arnage Red Label has been named as the recipient of a prestigious award in engineering excellence by the Institute of Vehicle Engineers. Announced at the Corus IvehE Motor Show Awards 2000, the Arnage Red Label outpaced the Mercedes S Class and BMW 7 Series in the “2 to 5-door Car Over 50,000 British Pounds Sterling” (USD: $80,645) category.

By GlobalDataAs part of its program to develop the Mid-Sized Bentley (MSB) at its worldwide headquarters in Crewe, England, Bentley Motors will invest $21.5 million for the construction of new wood and chrome shops, as well as $90 million for plant and equipment for the MSB assembly line.
In the months ahead, Bentley’s MSB program will also see the completion of a $5 million state-of-the-art engineering development and test facility, as well as the second phase of a new $2.4 million design center. That facility will house a team of 40 design specialists, who have recently received approval on interior styling of the new vehicle. Exterior styling secured formal approval in December.
Bentley Motors also announced that 400 new employees, mostly engineers, will be recruited to support the MSB program, which represents an $800 million investment by its parent, Volkswagen AG. The company projects that MSB will take Bentley into new markets, resulting in a sales increase from 1,500 units to 9,000 annually over the next five years.
