Wabco will spend US$17m to build a new factory in Charleston, South Carolina to meet increasing demand for its air disc brakes (ADB), air compressors and related systems.

The supplier said announced that it had signed a long term supply agreement with Hendrickson Trailer Commercial Vehicle Systems to provide an air disc brake system for trailers in North America.

It will ‘localise’ its production in the US while continuing to manufacture air compressors, actuators, and other braking system components in Charleston. It started on air compressors in South Carolina in 1996.

Construction of the new, 145,000 sq ft facility is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The company will then relocate from its exiting Charleston site to the new factory scheduled to be fully operational by the first quarter of 2016. The move is expected to around 50 new jobs and help sustain 175 existing jobs.
