Volkswagen is apparently readying a four-door coupe version of its Passat sedan similar to the CLS derivative of Mercedes’ E-class.
According to The Car Connection (TCC) website, ace auto spy photographer Hans Lehmann caught the German automaker testing a four-door coupe Passat in the US desert southwest.
TCC said the four-door coupe, scheduled for launch at next spring’s Geneva motor show, will offer a choice of two engines: a 160-hp, 1.8-litre turbocharged four, and a turbocharged 3.6-litre V6 version with 300 horsepower and all-wheel drive. A wider variety of engines is to follow in the year after its launch, the report added.
The Car Connection said VW will aim its new four-door coupe at the United States, China and Europe where competition will be strong: Audi is planning an A7 four-door coupe to fill the gap between the A6 and A8, and BMW is thinking about a four-door coupe for the next generation 7-series range.
