Installations have already begun with the first location in San Diego county.

The companies plan to set up nearly 100 direct current fast charging stations in the first phase of the project. These stations, which are expected to become available by the end of 2015, will be located in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland on the west coast and along Interstate 95 on the east coast from Washington, DC to Boston.

These stations will be built at restaurants, shopping centres and rest stops and other convenient locations, PCMag reported.

Each station is expected to have one or two 50kW direct current fast chargers or 24kW direct current combo fast chargers compatible with Volkswagen and BMW EVs. The stations will also include level two chargers compatible with all EVs.

Head of EV infrastructure at BMW of North America, Robert Healey said: “The express charging corridors are another important step in the development of the US e-mobility infrastructure that makes longer distance travel a real option for consumers, particularly along the most heavily trafficked portions of both coasts.”
