Toyota Boshoku Corporation will establish a new automotive interior manufacturing company, Toyota Boshoku Canada, in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada.

The province of Ontario is home to Canada’s auto manufacturing industry and there are both ‘Detroit Big Three’ and Japanese ‘transplant’ vehicle-making facilities in the region.

This new $C65m company will be the first Toyota Boshoku wholly owned seat manufacturing facility in North America and will produce RAV4 (a small SUV) seat, door trim and carpet interior parts for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada’s (TMMC) Woodstock plant, which will begin operations in 2008.

This will be the first plant to make the RAV4 outside of Japan and follows an earlier decision to make the first Lexus model, the RX series SUV, outside Japan in Ontario as well.

Currently, Toyota Boshoku has 15 production facilities in North America (both wholly owned and JVs).

“The establishment of this new Canada based company along with current North America production sites is important for Toyota Boshoku’s North America business development,” the company said in a statement.

It is planning for an annual volume of 150,000 vehicle units a year and will have around 330 workers.

Parent Toyota Boshoku Corporation of Japan also makes automotive filters and power train components as well as interior trim sets.
