Toyota Motor Sales USA is to recall approximately 39,100 stainless steel exhaust tip retention clamps.

The optional accessory was designed specifically for 2008 model year Highlander [Kluger]and Highlander HV vehicles sold in the US.

The company said that due to improper heat treatment, the original clamp used to secure the exhaust tip to the exhaust pipe may develop microscopic cracks which may expand causing the clamp to break and, in the worst case, the exhaust tip to fall off.

Approximately 39,100 accessory kits may have been affected. Because the part is installed at Toyota’s vehicle processing centres and by dealers, and also available at parts counters, 121,000 vehicle owners will be notified.

There have been 10 reported incidents in the US, Toyota added.
