Toyota has said it will recall RAV4 EVs to repair components supplied by Tesla.

The RAV4 EV recall concerns approximately 2,500 Model Year 2012 – 2014 RAV4 EV vehicles.

Toyota said components in the Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Assembly, which is part of the propulsion system, may cause the vehicle to shift to “neutral” due to a software issue. This condition will also trigger a “Check EV System” warning message on the instrument panel and turn on a malfunction indicator lamp.

If the vehicle shifts to “neutral”, this will result in a complete loss of drive power, which can increase the risk of a crash, Toyota said.

Tesla supplied Toyota with electric powertrains for the RAV4 EV in a three-year deal that ended last year.

Toyota is currently putting more emphasis on hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles such as the recently launched Mirai. Tesla’s Elon Musk has been critical of hydrogen technology in the past.
