Toyota is to recall about 90,000 2008 Highlander [known as the Kluger in other markets] sport utility vehicles in the United States.

The Highlander SUV and hybrid version with third-row seats need retrofit changes to the seat belt to fix a problem that could prevent a rear-facing child seat being secured in the third row.

Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong told the Associated Press (AP) the company had issued a stop sale of some 2008 models built between May 2007 and March 2008.

Kwong said owners would be notified of the recall in June and dealers would install a newly designed seat belt component.
